When a book is more than the written word

Book Art is a fascinating form of artistic expression that combines literature, design, and visual art. A journey into this vibrant subculture will open up a world of altered books, artist books, or book-inspired installations that push the boundaries of traditional book formats, exploring innovative storytelling and incorporating unique materials and techniques. All of which can be experienced in the annual exhibition The Art of the Book this May at Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley, CA.

The history of book art in California is rich and diverse, reflecting the state's artistic spirit and innovative approaches to the book as a medium.

Its origins can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the Arts and Crafts movement and the fine press movement had a significant impact. Influential figures such as William Morris and his Kelmscott Press inspired bookmakers and printers in California to pursue fine craftsmanship and the integration of art and literature.

By the mid-20th century, California had become a hub of artistic experimentation and countercultural movements. Artists like Wallace Berman and Jess Collins began incorporating collage, assemblage, and other unconventional techniques into their books, blurring the boundaries between art, literature, and personal expression.

Fast forward again to the 1950s and 1960s, and San Francisco’s role as the home of the Beat poets, including Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg, who collaborated with artists and printers to produce limited-edition poetry books that emphasized the handmade and the tactile.
